I hired Dave P. / Barry F. of Best Move #1 to move me in mid-June 2010. The gentlemen arrived on time and were courteous. There did come a time during the move when I felt they were chilling out a little bit too long. They performed good service. My problems came when it came time to pay the bill. Dave/Barry (the one person I spoke to gave me two different first names - Red Flag), gave me $5 discount off of the normal rate of $80/hour. However, he felt it necessary to send only three men to move a 2-bedroom apartment. In the estimate I was quoted, I was told that I would be charged only a 1/2 hour travel time because the move was within Brooklyn, and the places were only 10 minutes by vehicle away from one another. However, on my bill, I was charged 1 full hour of travel time for a ride that took them 10 minutes. I got to my new apartment 3 minutes before the movers arrived!
When we got to the new apartment, I was asked to settle the bill in cash. That wasn't a problem for me. The issues came with the excessive charge for tape and packaging materials to wrap the glass to my coffee table (3) pieces and a mirror (1). They even used my boxes and somehow I was charged $44 in packing supplies. I simply didn't understand that.
Because the move was understaffed, the move wound up taking 1.5 hours more than was estimated. The combination of the travel time and packing supplies overcharging and the understaffing of the project, this resulted in unforseen costs.
Unfortunately for me, the foreman of the project was unable to communicate effectively in English. When I noticed that, I felt it was easier for me to contact Dave/Barry after the move was complete and ask for an adjustment to the bill. That is when Dave/Barry's poor behavior started. This e-mail and telephone demeanor are rude. Ultimately, he magnanimously decided that he would refund me $37.50, the extra 1/2 hour of travel time I was improperly charged. And, he wanted me to sign a release for that! As an attorney, if he wanted me to sign a release for $37.50, I was more than happy to do that. However, if I wanted to sue him for his bad business manner, a release meant absolutely nothing. He would still be sued and would wind up paying an attorney to litigate something that he would have never had to deal with had he dealt with his customers properly.
Finally, Dave/Barry distributed my number to an potential customer without my prior authorization. I was stunned when I received the call. I asked Dave/Barry not to distribute my number and he lied, saying that he did not. It makes absolutely no sense that a customer would distribute a telephone number to a complete stranger and offer up a testimonial about their services.
Take away points: Reliable, but get the price worked out perfectly. Have all your own packing supplies ready if you have glass/framed artwork to move. Make sure they don't sit on their butts too long. Most of all, get Dave/Barry on the phone the moment something is incorrect on that invoice while the movers are there. Do not wait.
