I wanted to deal with a local company so I hired Virginia Beach Movers. Actually this was not the company I dealt with. They brokered the work out to a company in Ocean View and then had the audacity to charge me for travel time and a fuel charge. The movers asked to come early. I obliged. They (three inexperienced young men of foreign extraction, probably college students) came in a rented Budget truck. They were nice, hard-working, and cheerful. I signed the contract in advance for the minimum price. It was obvious that the head of the movers was not adept at writing up the contract. He talked on the phone for almost thirty minutes trying to write up the contract. I did not understand the language they used on the phone but it was obvious they were trying to formulate the bill as they went along. After moving our things, again there was a discussion on the phone between the head mover and a the moving company rep. They charged me for fuel and an extra hour. The final bill was over $500 for a minimum amount of furniture, boxes, etc. I said I would not pay the final price. The lady threatened me over the phone and said she would confiscate my goods. After much haggling, I paid $400 dollars and gave the workers a handsome tip since they said the management would not pay them. But it was still not over. Although I had paid and received a receipt, the management said they were charging me overtime (total over $600) and would not move my stuff. The movers waited another thirty minutes in the hot sun in our front yard. IT WAS SURREAL. Finally, I said I would go to the police. They broke two lampshades and a spring on the door. I said nothing. Maybe one day my family can look on this experience and laugh. It was an unbelievable experience.
