USVL is a service that does not move your things, it just finds a moving service for you.
They farmed us out to "Best Price Moving" in Chicago
Our initial quote was for 3000 lbs. Another representative called us a few days later and suggested we get it quoted at 5000 lbs just to make sure they made room for our things on the van.
Don't worry about how high this new estimate is, they said, this is just a formality. The actual price will be based on what your actual weight is.
In the end, we were charged for approximately 4700 lbs.
We thought this was strangely high for a 10x10x10 room with no large furniture.
So, we bought a bathroom scale and were easily able to weigh each item. Our weight came to approx 2400 lbs!!!!
That is right, their weight was almost DOUBLE our weight.
Cost to us: about $1500 dollars.
We called USVL and offered to show them our individual weights of each item on their itemized list. The weights were comparable to weights they use in their general estimates (ie, we did not fudge any numbers).
USVL basically told us 'too bad and too late'.
They said they have a policy for when the weight is in question. We should have had the movers reweigh it when they got there on one of their "official scales". You know, the kind of highly accurate scale where weight magically doubles.
We did, in fact, tell the movers that we thought this weight was really inaccurate when they arrived. The movers agreed, but did not offer to reweigh it. We were completely unaware this was an option (and definitely not aware that it was required) until we contacted USVL to make the dispute.
My contact person, Darren Tarr, was quite nice while making the deal and told me he would be my contact person throughout the move. He could not, however, be reached again once I paid the deposit and did not return any of my calls.
Please don't repeat our mistake and go elsewhere!!
I also suggest you request a reweigh from the start of your move--just assume that their numbers are wrong and save yourself some money and some outrage.
