Here’s the facts. Draw your own conclusions.
1. I was moving about 500 miles away and got a bid from several moving companies. Most were around $1500. Twins Moving came in around $1110, so I contracted with them. Companies that I did not contract with came back to me with discounts as much as $300, so try to negotiate the bids.
2. For this move, I had about 30 items, including a queen bed, a sectional sofa, and a large armoire. About a week before the move sent an inquiry about moving my hard rubber rowboat—12 feet. I was told, “no problem.”
3. Movers showed up on time, did a professional job. I was told I needed to add $100 for packing materials—blankets, plastic wrap, and tape. Cost is now: $1210.
4. The day before the scheduled deliver, I got a call that the boat “wouldn’t stand up in the truck.” Add $200. Cost is now: $1410.
5. The day of the delivery, I was half way through the 500 mile trip to meet the truck at the receiving end when I got a call—“Your things are taking too much room in the truck. You need to pay another $433. I said there was nothing in the contract about “too much room,” only weight. I was told, “if you want your things today, you will need to pay. Otherwise, we can hold your goods for an additional 7-10 days.” Since I had scheduled time off work and was half way to the destination, I caved in and agreed to pay. Additional $90 charge on the bill: “extra pickup or delivery.” Cost is now: $1933. They only take cash at delivery.
Note: in contract fine print, it does say "final charges will be based on actual weight or cubic feet/volume of property and services provided." and "actual charges may exceed the amount of estimate." There is no specified charge for "cubic feet" so I guess contractually they can charge whatever they want.
6. Delivery was on time and professional, no damage. Delivery team was contractors and not employees of Twins.
Note: I was told that my furniture exceeded the 3000 pound limit by 900 lbs. I did not verify, but taking them for their word, that would add $300 to the original contract price which I would not dispute
