We contracted with TSI, Transit Systems, Inc. to transport 7 pieces of inherited furniture from Maryland to California. TSI advertises that it will send out 2 men who will package the items and load them on to a truck. That's about half right. The two men said that they were taking the items to another location to package so they just loaded the furniture on to the truck with no protection at all and took off. We did not realize how bad things were until the furniture arrived in California. The furniture (buffet, 2 dressers, desk, secretary, chair, cedar chest) had been wrapped only in paper (you read that right - PAPER!) with no cushioning or corner protectors, and had then been stacked up and put on to pallets and wrapped in plastic. When it arrived at the local Bekins office for redelivery to us, the local Bekins office filed a report that the furniture was damaged before it reached them and they were not responsible. Some of the furniture was falling off the pallet. The Bekins damage report noted that two legs on the buffet had been broken off.
When the furniture was delivered to us, the Bekins driver suggested that we take photos of the items on the truck wrapped in paper. We did this and would be happy to forward photos to those interested so you can see how TSI packages its items. The buffet had two legs broken off and the top finish was seriously scratched. We could see that this was new damage as the gouges to the top had broken through to fresh red wood. The secretary and the desk both had molding pieces torn off. An oak dresser had two wooden wheels broken off. There were several deep gouges to edges and surfaces as one would expect with heavy furniture wrapped in paper and stacked up for a 3000 mile journey. The chair for the desk never arrived and was later found to have been shipped to another address.
When shown the photos of how the material was packaged, TSI still refused to take any responsibility. They said we were underinsured. They have an insidious formula for computing how much they will pay and this resulted in them offering us less than $400 on damage over $3,000. This is a thorougly dishonest company.
