StarCity Moving

We hired StarCity Movers to help us move 0.8 miles. Generally someone comes in to give a quote, but here it was done over the phone. We were a little uncomfortable, but the moving company said that is how they do it. So, just to make sure we went over the inventory list twice with StarCity movers to make sure that they know what all they will have to move. They gave us a flat, guaranteed rate with a minimum of 3 helpers, included 5 wardrobe boxes and we signed the contract.
However, on the day of the move, which was November 10, 2014 only two movers showed up with no wardrobe boxes. When we asked them why there are only two of them and where are the 5 wardrobe boxes, they said that the other guy didn’t show up and their manager didn’t tell them anything about wardrobe boxes. When we showed them the contract they said the best they can do is share with us the two wardrobe boxes they carried to store blankets (to wrap furnitures).
We had a certain time window booked for the elevators in both the buildings and we panicked thinking what if they can’t move within that specific time window and so we called StarCity inquiring about the missing wardrobe boxes and asked them to send the third mover. The representative who answered the phone said that she would get back after talking to the field manager. We waited for 45 minutes, but no one called. Then we had no choice but to run to the home depot to get the wardrobe boxes.
Long story short, we have a lot of furniture, which was not quite manageable by two movers, and as a result, they damaged our furniture and broke expensive glassware, which were packed with bubble wraps in the box and were labeled FRAGILE.
Our furniture is from Ashley’s and they broke the knob of our dresser which is about 200 pounds, scratched the frame of our king bed, ripped of the cloth underneath the leather sofa and scratched the leather. Other than that they destroyed two serving sets, which we had received as a gift during our wedding from pottery barn let alone cups and other glass stuff. When we called them the next day to tell this, the owner of StarCity told us that they are not liable for what was in the box. However, we are yet to understand why they only could send two helpers when the contract said three and two wardrobe boxes when the contract said five.
We have moved 4 times in the past and this is for the first time we have come across such an unprofessional moving company. If they had sent three movers I think the move would have been easier and maybe our furniture and all those glassware could have been saved. I am saying this because those two guys were so tired after loading the furniture, boxes and 5 wardrobe boxes, that they went for 1hour 30 minute lunch break in the middle on the move (which should have been a 30 min break). The movers constantly companied about how difficult it was for two of them to move all that stuff, and it was a three men job.
I would strongly advise not to hire this moving company. It is better you spend $100 more and get a reliable moving company rather than hire movers like StarCity. With the holiday season right around the corner we had to buy a whole serving set to replace our previous glassware. I still don’t know what I am supposed to do with the dresser and the bed frame. Our sofa was insured so that is something we can replace.
One last thing, which I have to mention, when I called StarCity Mover just to let them know how bad their service was. Instead of apologizing or saying what we can do to help the owner was like, where the furniture’s from, IKEA?
I would have loved to upload the pictures of the damaged stuff, but unfortunately there is no option for that.
