Orion Movers and Storage

My son, a new Ensign in the Navy was moving to his first duty station and made the very unfortunate mistake of picking Orion Moving & Storage to move his furniture. They knew from we first set up the move that it was a military move and that weight tickets were absolutely necessary. The original written estimate was for $1091.98 for 2001 pounds. When they arrived to pick up the shipment we were told that the shipment was heavier then estimated but that when they left our home they would weigh the shipment so they could determine the correct charges with the correct weight. He expected the shipment to be delivered on August 15 or 16. It was not delivered until August 22.
The delivery driver told us that there had been no place that he could get his truck weighed between North Carolina (his previous delivery) and my son's location in South Carolina. Since we were under the impression that there was a heavy weight ticket from the day the shipment was picked up we accepted delivery. He waited almost 2 hours for his "helpers" to show up which would have given him plenty of time to get to 3 different scales within 30 minutes of the apartment. The helpers left after about 1/3 of the shipment had been unloaded because they claimed to have heard something said that they did not like. The only thing that was said is that they should pull their pants up. We were seeing half their rear ends(not underwear). My husband, son and his friends carried the rest of the shipment in. When we spoke to the owners the next morning we discovered that there was no heavy weight ticket from the pickup date. They offered to reimburse a part due to us having to deliver the shipment ourselves and told my son that they would get back to him about it. He has never heard from them.
He was charged for 6300 pounds ($3674.16). We have submitted documentation to Orion Moving of the weights of 25 of the 36 items on the inventory totaling 2071 pounds. The other 11 boxes were dishes, pots & pans, other misc kitchen items, clothing, bedding, roller hockey gear and small appliances. It is impossible for these 11 boxes to make up the rest of the weight to equal the 6300 pounds we were charged for. Orion Moving is not at all interested in looking at this documentation. The last contact from Ms. Torrey said "There is nothing more we can do at this time."
The $3674 is about two months pay for my son and he will not be reimbursed by the Navy without the proper documentation.
Orion Moving does not return phone calls when messages are left. They do not call when they say they will. They have continually lied to us. We have been told that we never asked for weights tickets and also been told that it is in the file in bold letters. We have been told that the heavy weight ticket is out with another shipment and then that there is no weight ticket.
