I have hired this movers based on their ad in 123movers.com and Craigslist and got a quote kind of mail for 210$. Then I called the number and found out it’s a hourly rate and the initial estimate is $210. Over the phone, I am told stairs, Blankets/Tapes are included. Two days before the move, a deposit of 150$ has been paid and got some free boxes. At the time of the move (7-Feb), I am asked to sign some docs (as explained related to insurance, cancellation fees and permission to enter). The supervisor of the move was cunning enough not to let me read the whole document. I am told I have to pay the final bill in cash and gave an estimate of around 300$ (no document evidence). I am also told the blankets and tapes are free of charge.
Once we reach the destination, the supervisor came up with a bill of 1000$. He demanded the remaining 850$ be paid before unloading by cash or else he will keep them in storage and charge me for storage as well. The charges for elevator, long carry and Env Protection to the tune of 400$ were included which I was never told. Also he charged me 160$ for the Blankets/Tapes. I did argue and he showed me that I signed some docs which specify these. Since he didn’t provide me a copy, I have no way of finding whether I signed any kind of document related to the charges. Since, I didn’t carry enough money, I offered to write a check. He insisted on paying before staring unload. He charged me an hour more for the time I took to draw the cash and come back.
Since I didn’t want to pay extra charges for storage, I had to pay him in full. Also these movers were very slow and whenever I asked them not to do wrapping, the supervisor was ready to stop the move and ask me for the cancellation fees (250$).
I would like to know whether you would be able to provide me any kind of assistance. This I feel is some kind of fraud by saying something over the phone and does something after wards. Also the initial estimate and final bill differ by 5 times.
