I found First call Movers by requesting competitive quotes at an online moving site. Sal from First Call Movers was first person from a company that contacted us. We were moving our daughter to start a new career in Texas. They were moving some small furnishings and mostly clothes. We had all the items boxed and weighed, so knew exactly what needed to be moved. However, we needed the move to be completed on a certain date (between 5/25 & 5/27/13) which was stated during the initial negotiations. Pick-up times could be adjusted, but delivery MUST occur during requested range. I was assured by multiple people at FCM, that this delivery time would be met. A $500 deposit was required and paid online.
The day of the move a sub-contractor showed up with new contracts, for about $3000. However, when asked, they indicated that the delivery time-frame couldn't be met. Based on this, I declined to allow them to take the items. I immediately called FCM and advised them of the situation and my need to cancel the pick-up based on the inability to meet the delivery requirements which were promised - albeit verbally.
Of course I can't get my deposit back as I cancelled within 7 days of the move! But the reason I cancelled was due to the inability to meet the delivery requirements - which were promised only verbally. In retrospect, FCM was willing to commit to anything verbally as they knew a new contract would be forthcoming that would not coincide with their original promises. Also, I wouldn't be likely to cancel outside of the 7 day window. So, they either get additional money on a move that doesn't deliver on my needs, or I cancel and they get to keep the deposit. They "win" either way by lying, and THAT they do VERY well.
P.S., I disputed the deposit fee with Discover Card, who I used to pay the deposit, but they sided with FCM after reviewing the case based on original contract language. I'm also disappointed with the credit card companies, who despite knowing about the shoddy way that FCM does business, is not willing to pull support by not authorizing further transactions. So in the end, more consumers are scammed and treated fraudulently. I am also not going to use Discover Card anymore until / unless they pull their support of FCM.
Shame on FCM! Shame on Discover Card! Shame on me for believing in them!!
