This is the worst moving company in the world. And they don’t care; they make no attempt to hide the fact. At least, not after they have half your money and all of your belongings . They are masters at what they do, which is: lie. Lie, lie, lie. And I did my research beforehand. I checked out online reviews of Compass, along with a handful of other companies. The problem is, unfortunately, that you’d be hard-pressed to find an inter-state moving co. that doesn’t have at least a few bad reviews telling you, “Don’t ever use this company!” (because movers take advantage of people in a BIG way). Well, now I’m here to tell you, “Don’t ever use this company!”
First, I have to agree w/Stephanie’s review and give props to Jeremy and the other guy (who’s English wasn’t very good) who came to get my stuff in Texas. Although he could have been a little more professional and a little less condescending, he was nice and I (at least) felt that he had my interests in mind. It was after Compass had all my stuff that everything went downhill (go figure)…
I was moving from TX to PA and I gave Compass a first available delivery date of Aug. 1st – that’s one week after the movers picked up my stuff in San Antonio. The company kept repeating to me how they had a 2 week window from Aug. 1 – 14th to deliver my stuff, and it seemed to me, from what they were implying, that my stuff would arrive LATER than sooner, so I (stupidly) bumped my 1st availability date from Aug 1 to July 31, which I regret doing (I wasn’t thinking - I was doing the whole 1,500 mile move alone and had a lot on my mind. I never imagined that the mover would actually be there on the first avail day). When someone from Compass called and told me that that’s when the driver would, in fact, be there, I said, “Fine, I’ll cut a day off of my (attempt at a) little mini-vaca in Florida, and drive up and be in PA on the 31st, which I was. Not only did the driver NOT show up on the 31st - he wasn’t there on the 1st, or the 2nd – he didn’t show up until 4 days later! And with a bad attitude. Also, it was painfully obvious that the guy did not know what he was doing behind the wheel of the truck or in terms of moving my (poor) things.
My boxes, first off, looked like they had gone through WW2 with the way they were crushed, torn, broken, with some things inside broken as well (I didn’t even bother pursuing that). But, as if that weren’t enough, it had been raining in PA prior to the day the mover showed up. When the “mover” finally got the truck parked (that took a half hour – I’m not even kidding), I waited for him upstairs for quite a while. When I finally came downstairs to see what was taking him so long, I saw that he had taken every last one of my things (boxes, etc.) and just put them on the wet pavement! I could not believe that anyone would be so stupid or careless. He then argued with me when I said something about it. He actually argued with me about my stuff not being wet! After putting everything outside on the wet pavement, he then proceeded to move everything in front of the elevator (not IN the elevator, in front of it). After that, he started to CARRY my boxes into the elevator. I had to actually tell him to use his dolly! Like he’d never moved anyone before (and he probably hadn’t – I wouldn’t be surprised). The whole thing was completely traumatizing and painful, especially so when you’re a woman alone with no one to help stick up for you, or at least go through it with you (not to make women sound helpless. This is just how I felt).
I also had the same problem as Stephanie with the money order, but I noticed this beforehand, thankfully. Still, I had to send my money order all the way back to my credit union in Texas by snail mail so that they could re-deposit it, and I had to withdraw over $500 from my new credit union in PA. But I did the only thing I could do to get even with anyone associated with this company: I paid the guy in all 5 dollar bills. No bag. No rubberband. I just handed it to him. He complained and said he was going to call the company (not that they could have done anything about it – it WAS cash), but I called his bluff.
Of course, throughout this whole hellish ordeal, like the other review, no one from that God-forsaken company ever called me back, though I called enough times to let them know I meant business. If they ever did return a call, it was days later and it was a message, or it was someone passing the buck. You know, “no one knows what anyone else in the co. is doing” - that game. I never got any explanation or – God forbid – an apology as to why I was told that the guy would specifically be there on the Aug. 1st, so that I had to cut my only attempt at a vaca for the next few years short, and he didn’t show up til 4 days later. They just. don’t. care.
So, again, the lesson for today is –
Compass Van Lines: WORST MOVING CO. IN THE WORLD.
