These people are a nightmare. The problem with going through a broker, as opposed to a regular carrier, is that any promise they make you, spoken or written, is worthless: if anything goes wrong, the broker blames the carrier and the carrier blames the broker – “They said that? We never said that.” And this broker is as bad as they get. When my wife eventually called the feds about them, she was told they’d received numerous complaints about Budget but had never quite managed to shut them down.
Budget told me our stuff would be carried by a major national company like Mayflower; they placed it with a small New Jersey company which had received a grade of F from the Better Business Bureau. Our stuff was picked up four days late and arrived 28 days late, spending more than a month in a warehouse where it received water damage. When the movers did arrive, they shook us down for $1130 in charges that weren’t in the original contract. If we didn’t cough up the $1130 – in cash – they were going to drive away with our possessions, and the police (yes, we called the police) couldn’t do a thing, because it was a civil rather than a criminal matter. The movers also added numbers to a form my wife had signed after she had signed it, which is fraud. We can prove the fraud, but now we have to chase them through the courts from 2000 miles away.
Hopefully someone will shut these people down and make the world a better place.
