I was quoted a price of $300 to move the equivalent of a 2 bedroom apartment .7 miles (yes, point 7). I was sent a "contract" via email which I agreed to and electronically signed. The fee was for $75 / hour for a total of 3 hours moving and 1 hour travel time.
The movers were to be at my house between 8 and 9 a.m. I called the company at 8:30 a.m. just to be sure they were coming and Gail at the office said that they were on their way. A half hour later, I received a call back from Gail stating that they cannot find my house. I took this to mean that they were in my general area, but just needed some guidance. I asked her where they were and said I could direct them, but she evaded my question. I finally got a call from Jose, the driver and only English speaking crew member. I asked him where he was and he said "on 267". Their company is in Rockville, MD...so, I wasn't sure where on 267 he was and when I pressed him further, he said "oh, I am just getting on 267".
They arrived at my house at 10 a.m. Jose immediately came to me to sign a hard copy of the contract and proceeded to tell me that EVERY piece of furniture needed to be wrapped at a charge. This included couches, wooden end tables, coffee tables, dining room tables and chairs...he said he had to bubble wrap each piece for some ridiculous fee. Also, they were going to charge me to cover each mattress and box spring at $25 each...so, $100 in total. I asked him to show me where on the contract it states about each piece of furniture needing to be wrapped. The only thing that I had seen on my contract stated that glass items and mattresses needed to be wrapped. He kept pointing to that same section in the contract and saying that "every piece needs wrapped." I told him to stand by as I called his office. I spoke with Gail who was rude at this point and stated that yes, her movers will not move furniture that is not wrapped. I told her that is not what I had agreed to! So, she finally said that I could wrap my own couches and wooden furniture. She spoke with Jose and I assumed it was to tell him our agreement, but when they hung up, he still insisted on charging me for each piece. I had to get on the phone with Gail again.
My boyfriend had to run out and buy packing tape because that was the only way that he would allow us to use our own blankets to wrap and tape each piece. My boyfriend also stopped at the local mattress store and was able to buy mattress covers at $3 each instead of paying $25 each!
When I did sign the contract, I hand wrote a note stating that no extra wrapping charges were to apply. Jose became irate with me and yelled that I cannot do that. I told him that it is a contract and I can hand write things in the margin as long as I initial it. He was furious. He had to turn away from me.
None of the workers except Jose spoke English, so it was very difficult to instruct them as to what to do with items.
Upon arrival at my new home, Jose came into the house and told me that my bill was going to be close to $600! I asked him to explain why it was so high and he literally turned, walked out and said, "if you want your stuff unloaded, this is what you'll pay". It was ridiculous! I called the office once again and spoke with Gail who said I was being unreasonable and that they have to overestimate unloading time just in case! She said that if they used less time, they would reimburse me. She wanted to allow him to charge me for 5 hours moving time plus one hour travel. They had only been with me for 2 hours at this point! And unloading is quicker and easier than loading. In the end, they were only with me for 3 total hours.
After the movers had left and I went to my old house to clean up, I noticed a huge hole in the wall that they hit with a head board. We had to repair this. The headboard also had damage on it.
So, now that I have written this novel, just let me say DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY! BBB should be putting them out of business!
