My estimate with BR movers was $300 for 4 hours. I have a 2 BR/2Ba townhome. I live alone, so one of the BR was an office with a futon. My actual costs was $972XXXand 8 hours--over three times what the estimate was. I think the sales people need to go out on a move so they can see the time it takes. the movers insisted on blankets, tape, shrink wrapping everything, even though it was only a 2 mile move. the furniture could have been sent to China it was wrapped so tight. they took apart furniture that had never been taken apart before. They didn't even bring their own tools, and I had to get mine out for them to use. The sales person said I could leave clothes in the dressers. but the movers insisted that they be packed in boxes, which I happen to have some, but some things they took it upon themselves to put into their boxes, like big speakers...which had never been packed in boxes in the 30 years that I have owned them. naturally all this boxing was materials that they charged me for. Who would expect a box to cost $12-$15 each!! And with the tape and shrink wrap alone, just the materials were $300. I feel like it was a "bait and switch" operation. they should go to the person's house and see what they have to move and then give an estimate...I know the estimate is just that, but it should be a lot closer to the actual cost...I expected to pay $600, twice the estimate, but not almost a $1000...the estimate in this case was too far off to be helpful in determing what mover to use. My advice--have the mover come to your house to see what they will be moving, and the estimate will be more accurate.
