The moving company was late picking up my stuff. Said they would be there on Saturday and did not show up. NO PHONE CALL and office was closed. I left several messages including 2 on Monday before someone called me back to tell me what went wrong. Movers showed up after a couple of days, I had to extend my rent for 3 extra days. Company said they would offer us a settlement but not until after my stuff was picked up. After it was picked up, company offered $200. I had more in expenses due to them being late and not calling me promptly to let me know. My stuff finally showed up 6 days late. Driver was in bad mood and refused to bring his truck inside the apartment complex to unload my stuff. He wanted to charge me $650 additional to put my stuff in a smaller truck for delivery. My apartment complex has a truck entrance and since I have been here at least 10 other tractor trailer drivers have been able to deliver other people's stuff without issue. I called customer service to talk to the driver but they refused to do anything about it but tell me I had to pay the driver the extra or my stuff would go into storage and I would be charged extra for the storage and the delivery. I told them that I have 2 small children (under 2 years old) and need my stuff. It was after 5pm so the banks were closed even if I wanted to pay I could not. I was told there was no other way. Meanwhile, the driver left the area. He called me and said my only option to not pay him any extra money was to come to where he had parked his truck, in the industrial area of Portland (bad neighborhood), and he would put it in a moving van that I rented and then he would be done, leaving me to unload my own stuff. I took this option, which customer service at American Van Lines also said I should take because they said they would file a claim on my behalf with the truck driver's company. I spent 4 hours in the middle of the night unloading my stuff. The next day I called American Van Lines and they said they would offer me no additional compensation above the original $200 they offered and that was the end. They are dishonest and I would strongly encourage anyone who is considering hiring them to not do so as they will try and screw you at every turn.
