I obtained several quotes for my move from local companies in the DC metro area and decided to go with this company after talking to Tom. He told me that other movers that charged an hourly rate would quote me a lower price but would try to rip me off by raising the asking price on the day of the move. He also said that it was illegal to give hourly rates for interstate moves. Based on an estimate of my belongings, he gave me a quote of $812 (to move ~750 sq ft 1 BR apt) as a flat fee and said there would be no time limit, however long it took, no hourly fees. I asked him if they would pack boxes and he said they could, at a rate of $10/box.
I was not happy with the service and regret going with this company.
First of all, he showed up on the day of my move with one other guy in a 10 ft U Haul truck. If I wanted to hire two guys and a U Haul truck, I could have rented the truck myself and paid two other guys to help me for the day for far less than $800.
Now, by own omission, I ended up having more boxes and furniture to move than I had estimated (probably about 10 extra boxes, plus a couch and coffee table I was unable to sell). If they had brought a regular moving truck, it wouldn't have been a problem, but in the U-Haul, space was an issue. He couldn't take all my stuff and threatened to charge me more for the two extra pieces and boxes I had.
Packing? They didn't bring any boxes or packing material.
Damage prevention? They had some blankets but didn't bother wrapping any of my furniture (including TV and mirror) with protective layers. I ended up with knicks and scratches on some of my stuff from the move.
Time limit? They were fast (they came on time and moved quickly) but pressured me at my destination site because the elevator wasn't ready, even threatening to leave my things on the street. What happened to the flat fee for no time limit?
Customer service was poor and although I got all my things moved in one day, bottom line is who pays more than $800 for two guys to show up in a U-Haul and ding your stuff?
I moved all the same furniture for less than $350 (local move, within one block) about one year ago with Giant Van Lines. I should have just went with them again.
