This was a corporate move, the latest of four corporate moves we've had in the past six years and this was the worst by far. It was even worse than any personal moves we have done. Essentially what happened was that the quote was low so my husband's company wanted to go with that quote. Then we ended up having "additional costs" of $800 at the end because they weight of the move was more than they estimated, even though we asked them to come in person to give a quote (which another company did do).
After the contract was confirmed, the Verizon Van Lines essentially delegated the move to a third party and were not helpful at all, especially when it came to the broken items. Verizon Van Lines simply referred us to the contract and the fact it wasn't their problem but the movers. While that might have been technically true, Verizon Van Lines did not even seem interested in the fact our moving experience was terrible (which should have been made evident by the fact that we were calling because we were upset about the broken items).
Verizon Van Lines only confirmed the packing/pick up date after we insisted (several times) that we needed a firm date as we lived in a building in which you had to book an elevator and could not simply start moving without going through management.
We ended up having to race across the country to catch up with the movers because "their" schedule was such that we did not have the time we expected.
When we were at the new home unpacking, the Kansas folks were shocked at the state of the items as they unpacked them.
For example, the computer screen was placed flat on top of other items and not even wrapped in newsprint.
The dishes were not stacked upright but laid flat and there wasn't even paper in between each dish.
A number of lamps were broken.
The movers themselves were actually very polite, courteous and helpful and that was much appreciated.
We appreciate that things go wrong in a move and moves can't be perfect. The worst part of the experience was not the broken items or seeing the poor packing job. It was the complete and utter indifference of Verizon Van Lines and the lack of customer service after they had the contract from us.
