BEWARE - these guys are friendly and responsive until they have your belongings! After that, good luck getting any info from them.
I was relocating from NJ to CA and in search of a shipping company for all my belongings. I went with ARS because their quote was reasonable and they claimed they could deliver by the date I requested. We agreed on a pickup date of 7/6/07 and a delivery date of 7/15 or sooner at the price estimate of $1400 based on my inventory. They were ontime to pickup and after loading the truck, I was told that the price would be over 40% more ($2008 total) than the quote because my inventory list did not match up exactly (off by a few boxes) and they had to recalculate based on truck space. Considering my belongings were already loaded and I had to be out that day, I felt I had no other choice but to pay the new amount. The next week I called their office for status, and to my surprise, was told that they were not planning on leaving NJ until 7/13 (2 days before our agreed upon delivery date). I called them again on 7/16 for status and was told that my shipment wouldn't be leaving NJ until later that week and shouldn't expect my belongings for another two weeks, and that I wouldn't be compensated in any way. Countless more calls went in to their office to check on status and only ONE person (Nick-manager) was able to check on status of delivery. After finally receving shipment on 7/26, I unpacked everything and noticed a box was missing & a number of my items they packed were damaged. I again called their office and this time was told that Nick would be on vacation until 8/7 and that he was the ONLY person that could send me claim forms and he was the ONLY one that could contact the necessary people to try and track my missing box. Nick might as well buy an answering machine because the people in the office now are basically just taking messages for him.
I used ARS because they were were a BBB member and thought this made them a reputable company. After dealing with them it is clear to me that membership does not necessarily mean quality service.
Suggestions I would have if you were to use them, against all my warning. Ask for a guaranteed date of delivery. Also, ask for a guaranteed price. If they can't give you either, I would strongly suggest moving on. And upon pick up, fill in the Guaranteed Date box if not already and have the driver initial it.
