First, the company quoted me $286 for 3 hours of moving and an additional $55 per half hour extra. They told me they were going to arrive at 1pm on June 28,
2012.
They arrived three hours late. I complained about this and they agreed to take $5 off each half hour extra. We then agreed on the verbal contract and signed the initial contract.
Three hours later, and a lunch break in between; they closed the doors of the van. Unfortunately, not everything in our duplex was in the van. They said they couldn't fit all our belongings. There was a dresser they didn't even bother with.
Why hire somebody to move our stuff if they can't move all our stuff?
Then we arrived at our new place, about a 1/2 mile away.
They brought in the new contract. Here were some of the additional fees: $57.00 for 6 "Picture Boxes;" $193.50 for 86 "Bubble Wrap;" $36 for 8 "Tape;" $75 for 1 "Bioscreen;" $33 for fuel; and $95 to travel to our home.
There are a couple of things wrong with this. First, the exorbitant, hidden fees are what a moving company should already pay for.
Why am I paying almost $200 for bubble wrap?
Why am I paying $75 for a "Bioscreen," which is just cardboard boxes, to cover my TV?
Why am I paying $33 for fuel to drive a 1/2 mile?
Also, why am I paying $95 for you to show up at our house to work?
Nowhere on their website or the first contract does it state these additional fees. Eight months ago we moved from Virginia Beach to Norfolk (about 15 miles) and paid a company $750. This other company was extremely professional, quick and they moved every single piece of furniture.
Once we arrived at the new house, the price on the new contract was $919. We were not happy with the new price and expressed this. However, they said they had our stuff in their truck.
It was a complete bait and switch. Once they had most of our worldly possessions in their truck, they forced us to pay three times the quoted price to get our stuff back. This is ridiculous and shouldn't happen. I want to make sure they don't dupe other customers this way.
Norfolk Movers aka American Transporter, LLC, needs to be upfront with their advertising. These business practices are unacceptable.
