I recently used CNYX (California-New York Express) to move my
household goods from San Francisco to Boston. I had used them before
several years earlier and I felt confident as they did a good job and
seemed to care about my boxes as if they were their own.
This recent experience was not as pleasant.
The scheduling and booking was straightforward and simple. The people
in the front office did a nice job.
On the day of the move, the outgoing packers and movers seemed
professional and sensitive to all my needs. They were thorough with
inventory (although poor handwriting on the inventory sheet made what
followed more difficut) and clear with the process.
I was feeling confident that I would receive my personal effects in
the same manner that they were packed when they left San Francisco.
All this confidence went away when the Boston moving crew opened the
door of the moving van. Inside, my boxes were strewn about inside as
if shaken and mixed like dice in a Yahtzee cup. As they pulled the
boxes out I knew this wasn't going to be good.
Several of the boxes were water damaged. And not just a few drips,
I'm talking submerged in at least four inches of water. It's very
easy to see water damage on cardboard. They stain and leave ribbons
of dark lines. Some boxes were still wet. Not damp but wet.
Other boxes were completely torn in half and then re-taped haphazardly
with contents visible from the outside.
As I helped them move my damaged goods from the truck to my storage
unit they didn't seem to care if they kept beating up my furniture and
boxes. They banged furniture against door frames and dropped boxes as
if i wasn't even there.
When I submitted my claim (a nightmare of a process involving
certified mail, lost e:mails, lost mail, miscommunication and a
general air of incompetency) I was notified that all claims are denied
since CNYX did not pack my items.
Now, I understand this position if the boxes arrive fully intact
without signs of damage. They cannot be expected to protect items
that are poorly packed. If they can move the boxes and not damage the
box itself then I say they used due care.
If, on the other hand, boxes are ripped open and are still wet, then I
don't care who packed the boxes, the contents would have still been
damaged.
I have moved a lot. As a veteran, I have packed a lot of boxes in my
life. As a person who borders on obsessive compulsive behavior (I
only use new boxes and only use two sizes, all from the same
manufacturer. I actually buy that newsprint packing paper.) I am
confident I packed my items well.
I have moved myself across the country before and never a damaged
item. Not one thing.
Anyway, if you are going to use CNYX then have them pack your boxes,
buy additional insurance and cross your fingers.
I would not recommend them as it really looked as if gorillas had
moved my stuff.
[I have pictures if anyone is still considering using these guys.]
